Leadership is a Different Profession than Management

Some companies promote project managers into director roles and then act surprised when the business starts slowing down.

Execution is not leadership. Keeping meetings organized is not leadership. Updating status reports is not leadership. A project manager is trained to protect process. A director is expected to protect the business. Those are completely different skill sets. And when companies confuse the two, the symptoms appear fast: micromanagement; endless alignment meetings; fear of decisions; talented people disengaging; process replacing ownership.

The dangerous part?
For a while, everything still looks “professional.” Until performance collapses underneath the PowerPoint slides.
Not everyone who manages work can lead people. And not everyone who delivers projects can carry business responsibility.

Leadership is not a promotion.
It’s a different profession.
